You do not have to know the name of a diagnosis before asking for help. Perhaps worry is taking over your evenings, low mood is making ordinary tasks harder, or you want support after a difficult experience. Looking for mental health treatment in Eastern Kentucky can begin with a simple conversation about what has changed and what you need.
Describe the problem in your own words
When you contact a provider, explain what is affecting daily life and what kind of help you are looking for. For example: 'I have been struggling with my mood and would like to ask about an assessment.' You can ask whether the provider sees people with your concerns and whether the available services fit your age, location and circumstances.
If both mental health and substance use are concerns, mention both. Ally's co-occurring mental health treatment information explains that area of care. If substance use is not part of your situation, say so and ask the team which mental health services are appropriate and available.
Ask what the first appointment involves
An assessment is an opportunity to discuss concerns, treatment history, current medications and goals with a professional. Ask who you will meet, how long to allow and what to bring. You can write down questions beforehand, especially if you tend to forget them when nervous.
Treatment may involve therapy, medication when appropriate, or a combination of supports. The recommendation should reflect your assessment. You can ask how progress will be reviewed and what happens if the initial plan needs to change.
Make sure the practical details work
- Ask which insurance plans are currently accepted and whether your specific service needs authorization. Having insurance does not automatically establish coverage for every service.
- Confirm the appointment location, schedule, expected costs and how to cancel or reschedule.
- Discuss travel barriers before the appointment. Ask about available transportation arrangements instead of assuming a ride is included.
- Ask whom to contact with questions between appointments and what support the practice can provide outside regular appointment times.
