Finding a program is only part of getting care. You also need a reliable way to arrive, return home and keep coming back. If transportation is a concern, mention it when you first contact a provider. A ride plan should be confirmed before appointment day, especially when you are traveling between communities.
Ask about the exact trip you need
Give the provider your general location, the appointment address and the date and time. Ask whether transportation assistance is available for that trip, who arranges it and whether there are eligibility requirements. Availability can differ by location, service and schedule.
For Ally transportation questions, contact the team directly rather than assuming a ride comes with an appointment. Confirm which campus you will attend: Hazard, Jackson or Whitesburg.
Check Kentucky Medicaid transportation separately
Kentucky has a nonemergency medical transportation program for eligible Medicaid members traveling to qualifying covered care when appropriate transportation is otherwise unavailable. Eligibility and trip arrangements must be checked with the regional transportation broker.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises scheduling routine trips at least 72 hours before the appointment. Use its regional broker information to find the appropriate contact and confirm current requirements. Do not assume a request has been booked until the arrangements are confirmed.
Confirm the details that can disrupt a day
Ask about the pickup window, where to wait, how the driver will contact you and how the return trip works if your appointment runs late. Mention mobility needs or other accommodations when booking. Ask about an attendant if you need one, since that may involve additional requirements.
Save the transportation contact and appointment office numbers. If weather, road conditions or a change in your appointment affects the trip, contact both services promptly. Ask what to do after a missed pickup rather than quietly missing care.
Make a plan for repeated appointments
If treatment involves several visits each week, ask whether each ride requires a separate booking. Keep a calendar with appointment and pickup details, and review it when the treatment schedule changes. Ask a trusted person to help organize the information if that would be useful.
If travel remains a barrier, discuss alternatives with the care team. Telehealth may be an option for some services, but clinical suitability, availability and coverage must be checked. Start with 888-920-9004 for Ally access questions. Nonemergency transportation is not emergency care; call 911 for a medical emergency.
